The path from SAP AFi to SAP FPSL

The SAP Bank Analyzer module AFI (Accounting for Financial Instruments) is the sub-ledger currently used by many banks for the accounting of all financial instruments. It is based on the old R/3 environment, for which SAP has announced that it will discontinue regular maintenance in 2027 and only maintain it for a fee until 2030 at the latest.
The announced end of maintenance means that many banks are facing the challenge of transforming to the new S/4 environment and introducing the new S/4 HANA Finance modules.
THE NEW FPSL: OPPORTUNITIES AND OPEN QUESTIONS
In the course of S/4 development, the new subledger for financial products, the FPSL (Financial Product SubLedger). Compared to SAP AFI, customizing has been better structured here, allowing for shorter implementation periods and thus a significant reduction in implementation costs. In addition, SAP decided to focus more on the subledger functionalities and thus dispense with the transfer of the module editor in its familiar form and the secondary data sources. As a result, processing in the FPSL has been streamlined in many cases compared to its predecessor, which also leads to significantly simpler and faster operation. However, the functionalities mapped in the AFI must now be relocated.
SAP’s expectation to deliver the majority of the values to be posted from outside also leads to a new localization of many functions and processes that run in the SAP AFI environment today. The central questions arising from the changeover from SAP AFI to SAP FPSL are:
1. Which range of functions that I use today in AFI is supported by the SAP FPSL cover in the future?
2. How do I close the gap between the functionalities in today’s SAP AFI and the SAP FPSL, and where do I locate them?

We are aware that not all of today’s existing functionalities can be mapped 1:1 in the new S/4. This is why we are working with our customers to find new ways to relocate the missing functionalities. In addition, the switch to the new S/4 Finance platform can be used to eliminate existing workarounds and optimize existing processes.
