SAP TECHED BARCELONA – OUR CONCLUSION
SAP TechEd was held in Barcelona from October 8-10, 2019. The focus was on new technologies, which were actively discussed in interactive rounds, hands-on sessions and various presentations. Consultant Yannick Giernat (Managed Services) and Senior Consultant Gabriel Araujo (Data Management) represented ADWEKO as visitors and give their conclusion.
The event clearly showed that the SAP management strategy is moving strongly in the direction of cloud computing. To this end, the so-called “SAP HANA Cloud Services” was announced for a release by the end of 2019, which will include SAP HANA Cloud, SAP Data Warehouse Cloud and SAP Analytics Cloud with one access. Data tiering becomes much more transparent and native as it simplifies the management of hot, warm and cold data. The data from SAP HANA In-Memory (hot data), SAP HANA Native Storage Extension (warm data) and SAP HANA Data Lake (cold data) can thus be combined very easily in a Calculation View.
Cloud computing also offers the advantage of “Elastic Scale”, but what does that actually mean? In an on-premise HANA scenario, the size of the HANA instance is defined based on the peak overload. Often oversized, cost-increasing hardware would be the result. On the other hand, with the concept of “Elastic Scale”, the SAP HANA Cloud offers the possibility of keeping the size of the HANA machine for compute and storage resources elastic and flexible, which theoretically (pricing for this is not yet available) has a cost-reducing effect.
